Family, friends hold tearful memorial for SA girl killed by lover (Video)
There were tears as a memorial service was held in honour of the South African girl murdered and burnt by her lover.
Eyewitness News reports that the memorial service which held in her hometown in Diepkloof, Soweto, was attended by her family members, friends from school and human rights activists who all condemned the killer for sending such a bright young woman to her early grave.
Mokoena's death by her boyfriend who has since been arrested and arraigned in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court, had sparked outrage on social media recently with the hashtag #MenAreTrash causing debate.
One of her former school mate, Yolanda Slamadien who spoke at the memorial, said the deceased was a supportive friend and she will miss her smile.
“I’m going to miss how she always motivated us and always told us to push the hustle and always strive to be someone. She was into women awareness and against women abuse.”
The service was attended by hundreds of people who had come to show their support for the relatives of Mokoena and to hear the tributes which were paid to the University of Johannesburg student.
Mokoena was said to have been ambitious, goal driven, spiritual and full of life with lots of potentials but her life was cut short before she could fully realize it.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017, at the Diepkloof Hall at 8 am.
