Bauchi government close school students wedded themselves
A secondary school has been closed down by the Bauchi State government after it was discovered that students conducted secret marriages among themselves.
Premium Times reports that the teachers at the Sa'adu Zungur Model Primary and Secondary School located in the state capital caught a group of students celebrating the wedding of a pair of students and immediately reported the incident to the authorities.
It was gathered that one of the supposed grooms allegedly paid the sum of N500 to a female student as her bride price while their classmates contributed money for snacks for the ceremony.
When newsmen visited the school, one student reported:
“We learned that the groom brought large sums of money to the bride’s friends for settlement after the marriage had taken place.”
The state deputy governor, Nuhu Gidado, who is also Commissioner for Education who frowned at the embarrassing incident, said the closure of the school was most necessary and effective from March 10, 2017.
Gidado added that a committee comprising all directors in the state Ministry of Education, the school authorities, teachers and Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), had been set up to investigate the matter and come up with a detailed report before the school can be reopened.
