Sudan, formerly the largest country in Africa, has history, culture and topography that is second to none.

In 2011, after decades of civil war, the country of Sudan split in two, giving birth to a new country- South Sudan.

Away from the war and politics, Sudan is a beautiful country. There are travel restrictions due to internal conflicts and travellers must be careful as there are still clashes between the government and rebel forces.

The deserts and sand treasures of Sudan are treasures the world is only just rediscovering. Visiting Sudan is sure to leave one with eye-opening and unforgettable experiences.

Here are three places you should visit in Sudan:

1. The White Nile Bridge:

From the White Nile Bridge, you get the best view of the confluence of the Blue and White Niles.

Not only do you see the high point of the longest river in the world, you can see the actual colours of each of the Niles as they flow side by side.

The Niles blend downstream, dissolving into a colour that is neither white nor blue. You could be arrested for taking picture from this bridge.

2. The Sudan Ethnographic Museum:

The Ethnographic Museum displays a fascinating, albeit small collection of artifacts from tribes across the country.

The displays are organised according to geographic regions, illustrating how people adapt to the different climatic areas.

The displays begin with the tropics of today's South Sudan, to Khartoum's savannah regions, ending with the desert regions of the north.

3. The National Museum:

This museum is reputed to be the best in the country and its exhibits are breathtaking.

The ground floor of the museum documents the rise and fall of Kerma, Kush and Meroe Kingdoms.

Upstairs is filled with medieval Christian artwork from the ruins of churches in Old Dongola. Some temples rescued are displayed outside from the waters of Lake Nasser.

These three places are only few of the noteworthy places to visit in Sudan, especially if you're a tourism and culture enthusiast. The Northeastern African country is an important destination in Africa and the Arab world.
