Style Guidelines

Looking good and being put together is a matter of detail and paying attention to the little things that can ruin an outfit.

So, we’ve put together a list of some guidelines you ought to consider when getting ready in the morning. Some of these may seem basic but they are absolutely necessary:

.) The right underwear: Make sure your contrasting colored underwear, panty lines or slip hems aren’t peeking through your thin skirt or pant. You can do this by taking pictures from all angles or by going out into natural sunlight for a quick check.

.) Don’t do too many trends at once: Don’t match too many trends in one outfit. you could use metallic neutral colored heels with patchwork jeans. You could also separate your look with a plain white t-shirt and remember that less is more with trends.

.) Don’t drown in oversize pieces: If you have a maxi that’s too long or big, make it into a skirt with a plain top. Also, you could incorporate playful heels that could match with a statement piece of jewelry.

.) The right shoe-pant balance: Make sure to check your look in the mirror before you walk out the door. Cropped should show more than just the ankle. Also, if your shoes have details on them, make sure your pants are covering them. Avoid combinations like wide leg pants and flat shoes, which make you look shorter, so try heels instead.

.) Your accessories should be minimal: You could have one major accessory focal point like a statement bag or heels. Go with a simple outfit then to balance it out.

.) Check the length of your slit: If the dress you’re wearing has a slit, test it out before you leave for your event by wearing your heels and walking in them. Make sure you can move freely and that you’re not revealing too much.

.) Tuck in appropriately: If you have a great back side, show it off. If your top is too slouchy, tie it up or put it to the side. Pairing a super long tunic with denim won’t flatter you.

.) Choose the right hemlines for your height: Don’t let a long torso or short legs dissuade you. Make sure you're getting pieces in the right size and wearing them with matching accessories. If you're not sure, ask a friend or try asking a sales associate

.) Don’t show too much ‘bra’: Thanks to VS, now we have sexy looking bras but be careful in showing off. If you choose a white top, make sure it's opaque and not too loose. Finish your outfit with statement pieces.  And most importantly, be confident about it.

.) Try not to overaccessorize: There’s a way to go about layering. Balance big pieces with tinier details without going overboard. You could stick to one shape or gemstone or metal.

.) Choose the right neutral for your legs: Neutral shows off differently on each person because of our various skin tones. You’ll have to test to figure it out. Make sure to take photos to make sure your heels don't contrast. The booties or pumps you should be a little  darker than your legs and should work to elongate them.

.) Pair a crop top with high waist pants: The goal with crop tops is to bare a little skin not your entire midriff.  Match a small top with high waisted flared pants and remember to accentuate your waist.

.) Don’t mix too many prints/colors at once:. But careful of the way you mix. Go for a unpredictable match but balance it out with accessories that flatter both prints.  If one of the items is overpowering, switch it for something more subtle.

.) Don’t match items for a monochrome look: Monochrome is best with the basics. It’s best to go for contrasting textures when going monochrome. Matching your look with a fun pair of shoes or striking jewelry also helps.

.) Don’t let your socks slip the wrong way: Buy peds or a tight pair of socks and try them on with low rise shoes. If you are wearing skinny pants, you shouldn’t be wearing socks. Try different brands of socks till you find the ones that will fit all day long.

.) Get the right pair of shoes: Find the right height and the right silhouette no matter the kind of shoe and it takes some testing. Don’t buy a shoe just ‘cos it matches or looks good. Buy a style that you can feel like a million bucks in.
