When it pours especially in Lagos without access to one's personal car (horror) and in funny areas then dressing up can be a major task no matter how much of a stylish/fashion loving belle a lady especially is!
Dressing up when it's pouring heavily (even afterwards, everywhere will still be annoyingly wet) is a task but it shouldn't have to be for the fashion loving, fashion forward lady and these tips make sure you keep chic:
1. Pick pieces in dark colours; black, brown, nudes
When it rains, put away the whites, pinks and other fancy feminine colours! Instead opt for outfits in blacks, browns, nudes (which are usually slimming; a huge plus too). You can even match these colours for an understated but sophisticated/grown up look.
This way even when water splashes around, outfits won't get stained or have funny mud splatters and the looks will 'continue just chic' throughout the day.
2. Time to wear leather pieces
If you ever had leather skirts hidden away in the wardrobe the rainy season is the best time to style them up! Those leather skirts, pants, tanks and more are best worn when it's raining.
The great thing about wearing leather on a rainy day is it keeps the body cool- literally- as well as weather appropriate and of course any stain at all can be wiped off without residue! But of course leather pieces should ONLY be worn around these (wet/cold) periods!
3. Stockings/skin socks
If you ever wished to wear stockings/skin socks, It's the perfect time to bring them out to play! If for instance you opt for a short skirt daring the weather, you could wear a pair of skin socks- making sure to choose one that suits the skintone- by all means a dark skinned lady shouldn't wear ones meant for a very fair lady!
Use the rains as perfect excuse to whip out those skin socks and of course layer outfits!
4. The Jellies
A 'raining day' is the perfect time to wear 'jellies'- those solid rubber shoes- It's best to keep expensive leather footwears away from the rain, instead wear the jellies/Wellingtons! Vivienne Westwood has a line of chic footwear that are just perfect.
5. Throw on the kimonos (NOT the floor sweeping ones!)
Kimonos work on wet days. They can come as fab cover ups that can help keep warm or just layer to keep cold at bay. It's best however to keep kimonos short or midi during the rains so the edges don't end up wet and dirty.
6. Choose the right fabrics
For the rains, its best to keep the luxe fabrics away. Wear more cotton- they dry fast just in case the rains get heavy, stay away from silk, it retains water stains and dry off leaving funny patches.
Essentially choose pieces in low maintenance fabrics, it's the best time to let the glamorous/luxe fabrics rest!
