Ben Enwonwu, Kolade Oshinowo, Rom Isichei, Peju Alatise, others set to showcase at auction house

West Africa’s leading auction house, is set to hold the inaugural edition of the Affordable Art Auction.

Arthouse

The Affordable Art Auction is the third auction series to accompany our bi-annual auctions of Modern and Contemporary Art in May and November. The Affordable Art Auction is generously supported by Kia Motors and Luxeria. There has been an explosion of interest in contemporary African art in recent years, and there is a tremendous potential for investment. With the African art market at an unprecedented rise, The Affordable Art Auction aims to engage emerging markets and the rise of a new collector base.

Arthouse Contemporary particularly aims to focus on the network of local collectors to create a more sustainable and self-sufficient market. Each work of art in the Affordable Art Auction is priced below NGN 500,000, casting a wider net to showcase a broader scope of contemporary artists. After an open call for entries that totaled over one hundred submissions, Arthouse Contemporary is showing many artists in this auction for the first time, and it also includes works of art by leading modern masters and Africa’s most prominent artists —- all scaled to a more affordable and accessible price point.

The Affordable Art Auction includes works of art by seasoned professionals including Ben Enwonwu, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Kolade Oshinowo, Twins Seven Seven, Rom Isichei, Peju Alatise, Ben Osawe and Lemi Ghariokwu, among others.

International artists include Paa Joe and Jacob Tetteh-Ashong (Ghana), Leonce Raphael Agbodjelou (Benin), Cyrus Kabiru (Kenya), Sokari Douglas Camp (UK), and Chipika Simanwe (Zambia). The Affordable Art Auction includes three charity lots in support of the Society of Nigerian Artists, with all proceeds going directly to their fundraising campaign to expand their operations. Through this auction, Arthouse Contemporary seeks to open more opportunities for artists in Nigeria to sell their work and create a new audience to appreciate and interact with contemporary African art.

The aim of the Affordable Art Auction is to encourage first time buyers to take the leap into their first art acquisition and for more seasoned collectors to expand their repertoire.

The Affordable Art Auction will hold a Private Preview Reception on February 25, 2016, 6 PM, at the Kia Showroom.
