7 important things to consider before assigning sensitive roles to team members

Save yourself and organisation from the heartache and pain by considering the following things before you make that appointment or approve that promotion.

Many leaders and organisations have crashed because the wrong people were allowed to handle sensitive positions, or be at the helm of affairs.

Most leaders make the mistake of assigning roles and responsibilities based on emotional attachments and personal sentiments.

1. Commitment: You can never get quality results from an uncommitted team member. Commitment is a die-hard dedication to a cause or an activity.

2. Loyalty: This is the firm and constant support an individual has for an organisation or a person. A loyal person will stand firm with the organisation in trying times.

3. Experience: A person’s wealth of experience in a specific task or position is always an added advantage. Problem solving is simply the application of tested and workable principles to challenging activities, scenarios or events.

4. Relationship skill: Does he or she love people genuinely? Can he or she motivate the team to achieve a task? How does he or she communicate with peers and subordinates?

5. Analytic skill: How does he or she analyse issues? What is their attitude towards challenges? How do they react under pressure? The ability to analyse a trend or problem critically, and proffer a solution or predict an outcome is a plus for anyone who intends to lead a team.

6. Competence: What abilities, proficiencies or knowledge does he or she possess? Is it beneficial to the team? Are they required to accomplish the tasks on the job?

7. Values: Like they always say; If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything. People without core values and beliefs cannot be trusted to uphold the organisation’s ideals when the chips are down.
