Low key pregnancies - a new trend among our female celebs?

Going against the grain, Di'Ja and Osas Ighodaro are hinting that low key pregnancies in the entertainment scene might just be the new norm.

Di'Ja

Today (Friday, July 1, 2016) Mavin singer Di’Jaannounced that she had given birth to a baby boy. “So Thankful to the Almighty for an amazing journey. Thank you to my family and amazing friends for your ongoing support. Thank you to my Mavin family who are forever providing me with guidance and last but not least my amazing fans for their undying love, well wishes and badASS encouragement” wrote the female singer when she shared a cute video announcing the birth of her child and confirming that she is now married.

On Thursday, December 10, 2015 it was reported that Di’Ja had gotten married in an extremely private traditional wedding ceremony held in Kaduna.

Throughout her pregnancy Di’Ja did not announce or reveal that she was with child. There were no cute pregnancy photos or big revelation on Instagram. Di’Ja kept everything low key and still managed to have a presence on social media.

Earlier this week it was revealed that Nollywood couple Osas Ighodaro. The details surrounding the birth of their daughter were not immediately revealed.

The next day Osas Ighodaro said that their baby girl was born on June 21, 2016- a week before the news hit the stands. The actress also mentioned that her daughter came earlier than expected. Apart from these details the couple haven’t spoken much about the delivery of their daughter.

What makes Osas Ighodaro & Gbenro Ajibade’s pregnancy story more peculiar is that they only announced to the world that they were expecting a child in May when they appeared on the cover of Genevieve Magazine. A month later they were the parents of a bouncing baby girl. Even if their daughter was premature upon delivery the timeline doesn’t still add up.

Clearly both ladies, Di’Ja and Osas Ighodaro, were not comfortable about divulging a lot of information about their pregnancies. The stream of information about the birth of their kids is totally the opposite of what transpires in celebrity circles.

Normally in the entertainment business there is a big reveal followed by pregnancy photos. On Wednesday, June 29, 2016 Nollywood actress Ivie Okujaye announced that she is pregnant. She went on to reveal the sex of her child (a girl) and released photos to go along with it. This is more in line with the mainstream way of handling pregnancies in the Nigerian celebrity circle.

Not everyone clearly follows this route. Some women just want their pregnancy to not be a big deal. Nollywood actress Lilian Esoro was rumoured to be pregnant for months but she never released a statement confirming the story. It was only last month that the actress who is far gone in her pregnancy released photos of her baby shower.

Why are women in the entertainment business going below the radar when they are pregnant? It could be for a various of reasons ranging from privacy to spiritual.

It feels like Di’Ja wants to draw the line between her private life and public life. She doesn’t want a mixture of the two that’s why she has not released any photo of her husband or child. She hasn't even revealed her husband’s last name.

As for Osas Ighodaro the reasons for her low key pregnancy were spiritual. In her interview with Genevieve magazine she revealed that she has been quiet about her pregnancy to avoid a family tragedy reoccuring. “Losing a child is not easy on any parent so I understand why she is being protective. She even shared with me some Benin superstitions like putting a pin on my clothes to ward off evil and never telling anyone how far gone I am in my pregnancy and I am following her instructions to the letter. We know the culture we are in. Let’s be real, there are bad belle people out there so to protect this blessing we are going to enjoy this moment privately” she told Genevieve Magazine.

The actress also stated that she wanted to own the narrative of her first pregnancy. “This is my first child and I do not want people’s opinions or judgement at this time. I want to take back that power from the public and enjoy my pregnancy with all its challenges” she said.

Will more female celebrities hide away from the press and their fans when they become pregnant? Possibly. Not everyone wants to still be in the spotlight when they are with child. The new norm of low key pregnancies among female entertainers might influence the pregnancy culture in Nigerian entertainment pretty soon.
