FG promises to support locally assembled vehicles

The Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has promised to support the local auto industry.

Speaking at a one-day stakeholders’ forum on the Nigerian automotive policy, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, said the government was committed to developing Made-in-Nigeria cars.

Nigerian Bulletin reports that he discredited speculations about that the government would discontinue the automotive policy, introduced in 2013 by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

While announcing that the policy would be endorsed, Enelamah also said the policy would be reviewed.

According to him, this review would make room for the effective incorporation and implementation of suggestions from local automakers and other stakeholders.

“We are working with the stakeholders to achieve results. Going forward, government will come up with responses to the issues that were raised by the stakeholders in the forum. We will review the existing policy in line with all the issues raised at the forum.

Government is working on engaging banks and other financiers to act as technical partners both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria to provide funding for operators. Nigeria will also leverage technology to fight smuggling of used cars across the border,” he stated.
