State Of the Music Don’t expect any beef soon, our industry is too small and progressive for that

Beef does not contribute positively in Nigeria. Beef does not add to the Nigerian art. Beef is useless.

The Nigerian music history is riddled with a healthy history of beefs. From the early days of Fela Anikulakpo Kuti, down to the niche markets of Fuji and Juju, there has always been various beefs in the Nigerian music industry.

The emergence of Hip-hop in Nigeria ensured that it wasn’t left out. Ruggedman and Modenine’s beef still remain fresh in the hearts of Hip-hop heads who followed the rap-based fights and savored all of the good art that it provided.

But it appears those days are gone in the Nigerian music industry. The days when superiority is judged by the ability to release a diss track, or hierarchies are forged by the power of one rapper to take out another are gone. Longing for that is wishful thinking.

I see conversations about the Nigerian music industry and the lack of beef over the past three weeks. This is because in the US rap scene has been enlivened by a beef between two female rappers – Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma. The rappers, who once upon a time were friends, have released diss tracks, which are flying in the air right now, and seeping into the playlists of Nigerian music enthusiasts.

And it has created a small demand for beef in Nigeria. On twitter, there are calls for it. People are screaming for one artist to just let go, and fire out some shots, call out others, and drop an earth-shattering diss track.

But it will not happen. There will be no huge diss track to set the world on fire, and make twitter come on its knees. We are past that. The only people who still diss are yesterday’s men who are still caught up in that wave of petty contests and pissing competitions. In recent memory, only Don Jazzy and Olamide have sparred over the 2016 Headies, and it was settled in less than 48 hours.

Our industry has no space for beef. We have been there, done that, and moved on. And here’s why.

With the increase in technological advancement, the penetration of the internet, and the fusion of new sounds, opportunities have opened up. Artists are required every day to put their best foot forward in the search of more progressive ways to further their careers and spread the music. A good tool for this progress is collaboration with each other. Why fight Olamide when you can make a hit record with him? Why attack Wizkid when your life will be bettered by his voice on a song?

Beef is not progressive. Beef in 2017, is regressive. Although beef can be good for the art if it is executed in studios and hot tracks. But you know Nigeria. We lack true artistry in the industry, and every contest comes down to who is making money. Adversity in 2017 is not about who can out-rap or out-sing competition. That’s useless.

Many fans would kill for the idea of a beef. The blogs and websites will be in jobs as the scene hits up from punches and jabs. But that is all it will be. There will be no music from it. Neither will any artist record something that is worthy of listening. Instead, the battle will be on Instagram and Twitter. The battle will be useless.

With the amount of progress that the industry has seen right now, anything that does not translate to the success of the artist is useless. Anything that does not glorify the art is useless.

Beef does not contribute positively in Nigeria. Beef does not add to the Nigerian art. Beef is useless.
