Dear parent, you may have created a drug addict

Prescription drug misuse is the intentional or unintentional use of medication without prescription, in a way other than as prescribed or for pleasurable reasons.

Take Malaria for instance, when we were younger, the “quinolones “were perfect. Right now they are not at all effective , because of mutations that have taken place mostly due to misuse and abuse.

Every drug has its regime, but we are not careful to follow it. How can we when those who no nothing about medications and side effects are selling the? I have seen vendors carry antibiotics along with antimalarial, antipyretics, steroids and NSAIDs on trays… ON THEIR HEADS .. and sell them like one will sell oranges . “ Give me 2 tetracycline, 1 ampicillin and 2 panadol abeg, my body dey do me wankain “. And the vendor dishes out , like groundnut . This is wrong on all sides!

Parents now carry that same mindset along when it concerns their children. The amount of multivitamins that some children take! How many did you take in your father’s house?

Just so you know, there is something called drug dependency. A number of our children are becoming addicted to pain relief medication. Any feeling of pain and we quickly load them with Ibuprofen (one of the most abused medication in the world ).. BTW , ALL medication have SIDE-EFFECTS . Try not to forget that they put the liver and kidney to work and in some cases at risk.

I was counseling an adolescent whom by all indications is addicted to the Ventolin inhaler… and wait for it… he is not an asthmatic patient. His mother has been faithfully purchasing the inhaler for him because he always complains of “tightness of the chest “ and insists that he has Asthma. How can YOU believe what your child said and reject what the Doctor who did tests to prove that he doesn’t have, said?

Now he is convinced and pumps the inhaler at will or when he “has tightness of chest “. I am staring at what can be the beginning of a journey into drug addiction.
