Government concludes plan to move $2 billion Lagos ICT market

The move was announced by the government as part of its action plans towards advancing the state to a ''Mega-City' status.

Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode

This announcement was made during its 2017 ministerial press briefing held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in Alausia, Ikeja.

Computer Village is a popular information technology market which is patronised for a wide range of technology products, ranging from phones, laptops and other gadgets.

The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Wasiu Anifowose, noted that the market was situated in a residential area – Otigba Street – saying that it would be moved to the ICT Park, Katangowa in Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.

“If at the end of this administrative year, the Computer Village is not moved from that Otigba Street in Ikeja to Katangua, I will not come here next year," Anifowose said.

“It is a done deal; we have held a stakeholders’ meeting with the traders and they agreed to the relocation plan.

“It is an 11-year project that different administrations attempted to undertake but the present governor is a go getter.

“The relocation will deliver a world class computer and allied activities park. The process leading to the commencement of the development is in the concluding phase,’’ he said.

In 2013, the then Nigerian Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, said the market generates about $2 billion (N610 billion) to the economy annually, one which is feared could be lost to the proposed relocation.

Just like major markets in Lagos, Computer Village  evolved and developed through enterprising activities of youths, who are seeking to generate income of their productive activities by adapting advanced technology for local use.

It must be noted that the state government has had the history of advancing collapse of many local markets in recent past, which has led to loss of businesses income and unemployment of teeming youths around these market. Some of which are listed below.

Computer Village is situated in an area initiated planned for residential purpose, but the booming market operations has converted the area into multi-dollar ICT market.

Most traders and technology enthusiasts have expressed concern about the proposal of the state government, and would rather call for its reorganization than eventual relocation.
