Around 50,000 university students have been caught cheating over the last three years and students that do no originate from the European Union are four times more likely to cheat.

That's according to The Times newspaper, which obtained figures from Freedom of Information requests from the government. The data looked at 129 universities in Britain over the last three years.

5. Oxford Brookes — 1,711 cheats. “What I’d call type-1 plagiarism, copying and pasting, is on the wane because it’s so easy to detect. But my impression is that type-2 cheating, using a bespoke essay-writing service, is increasing," said Geoffrey Alderman of the University of Buckingham to The Times.

4. Sheffield Hallam University — 1,740 cheats. Alderman added that there are now agencies where rich students pay for professional lecturers up to doctorate level to write their coursework for them.

3. University of East London —1,828 cheats. As at October 2015 it had more than 19,000 students from 120 countries. The Times report says that across all 129 universities in the list of cheats, non-EU students made up 35% of cases. However, non-EU students only account for 12% of the student population.

2. University of Westminster — 1,933 cheats. This university was one of the 11 universities that caught 1,000 or more students cheating over the past three years.

1. University of Kent — 1,947 cheats. Five students were even caught arranging for someone else to sit their exams at this university, which is situated in Canterbury, near the famous cathedral.
