NFF worried over striker’s Manchester City snub

Rohr will be sent to Manchester, to meet Iheanacho and Guardiola to discuss the striker's future at City.

Manchester City's striker Kelechi Iheanacho celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the UEFA Champions League group C football match between Manchester City and Celtic at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, northern England, on December 6, 2016

Since the arrival of highly rated Gabriel Jesus, Iheanacho has not been named in Manchester City’s matchday squad.

The Nigeria international has not been named in four consecutive games while Jesus has started in three of these games even ahead of established striker Sergio Aguero.

The NFF at their executive committee meeting on Tuesday, February 7 discussed Iheanacho’s situation at Manchester City and made the decision to send the Technical Adviser of the Super EaglesGernot Rohr to City to know why the striker has been snubbed.

“We have decided to send Rohr to Manchester City to see Iheanacho and discuss his situation with him and the club,” an NFF source told Pulse.

“Rohr is back from Gabon where he covered the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for a radio station as a pundit. He will be in England shortly to see Iheanacho and (Manchester City manager).”

The source also added that Rohr will visit other players in Europe during his upcoming trip.

Why Iheanacho City snub is worrying for Nigeria

Iheanacho alongside Alex Iwobi of Arsenal and Victor Moses of Chelsea represent a new era for the Super Eagles are in a rebuilding process after failing to qualify for two consecutive AFCON.

Under Rohr, the 20-year-old is a very influential figure responsible for bringing back the star factor to the Super Eagles. He, alongside Iwobi, Moses and Captain John Mikel Obi are now very popular faces in the Super Eagles, bringing back an exciting feel to how Nigerians view and watch the team.

Playing regularly for Manchester City is a major reason why that has happened, which is why his current situation is worrying to the NFF and Nigerian football fans in general.

“Iheanacho is one of the young players we are banking on as leaders of the Super Eagles in the near future and we are concerned that after a bright start under Guardiola, the youngster dropped out of the substitute bench of Manchester City since the arrival of Jesus,” a top NFF official is quoted to say by .

With the 2018 World Cup qualifiers going smoothly so far, Rohr is very careful about the state of the team and wants to ensure the players remain in top shape for both club and country.

The good news here is that Guardiola has maintained that Iheanacho remains a part of his squad and one for the future.

It’s the future of the Super Eagles the NFF and Nigerians are worried about and Iheanacho represents a big part of it.
