Federal Government begins exploration in Lake Chad Basin

Borno State will soon officially become an oil producing state.

Black Gold (Crude Oil)

Following the Federal Government discovery of “Black Gold” (Crude Oil) deposits in some states (Bauchi, Borno among others) within the region, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has commenced mobilisation to the exploration sites.

According to the Chief Operating Officer of the NNPC, Engr. Saidu Mohammed, on Monday, May 15, 2017, during a visit to the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri to brief him on the corporation’s plans.

He stated that with the end of the insurgency and relatively return of peace to the state, NNPC has fully mobilised to site for exploration activities.

With this, Borno state will soon be officially declared an oil-producing state in Nigeria.

In October 2016, the NNPC in a report to the President Muhammadu Buhari stated that crude oil was discovered in commercial quantities in twenty-one of the twenty-three oil wells drilled within the region.

“Discoveries made in neighbouring countries in basins with similar structural settings are: Doba, Doseo and Bongor all in Chad amounts to over 2 Billion barrels (Bbbls); Logone Birni in Southern Chad and Northern Cameroon, over 100 Bbbls; and Termit-Agadem Basin in Niger totals over 1Bbbls.

“Already the NNPC New Frontier Exploration Services Division which is leading the charge for the crude oil to find in the entire Inland Basins is acquiring 3,550 sq km of 3-D seismic data for processing and interpretation in addition to the already acquired 6000km of 2-D data that is currently being reprocessed, the report stated.

The NNPC also noted that the prospecting activities for more oil are not limited to the Lake Chad Basin, as intensive searches are currently on-going within various regions considered to be a potentially oil-rich region in Nigeria.

“The search is not limited to the Chad Basin alone but covers extensive inquest in the entire Nigerian Frontier Sedimentary Basins.

“These basins includes Anambra, Bida, Dahomey, Gongola/Yola and the Sokota Basins alongside the Middle/Lower Benue Trough, the NNPC noted in the report.
