President’s health issues, Yar’Adua's saga evolving

President Buhari is to continue resting, until he is confirmed fit to resume official duties.

More worrisome were reasons given for his absence by his Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, after showing up in office for official duties on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

Mr. Lai while briefing journalists after the FEC meeting stated that President Mahammadu Buhari was not in the meeting because he chose to rest. He further dismissed all inquiries by the State House correspondents to ascertain if the president’s health had deteriorated or improving as “Bunkum”, and insisted it was in his interest to get adequate rest until he’s fit to work instead of forcing himself to work.

“The answer to your first question is absolute bunkum. It is absolutely untrue that he is being fed. He was in the office yesterday as you all reported.

“And if the doctors say he should take a rest, because they think he’ll recover faster, then he ought to rest rather than forcing himself to work when he is not fit to work.

“All he’s doing is following the doctor’s advice. Mr. President himself told the nation he had never been this sick and he is going to take it easy. He said it from day one when he came back from the United Kingdom.

“So, whatever is happening today is not any strange development. It is exactly what he said: that he’s been advised to take it easy by his doctors and that he will soon also go back for further treatment,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been ill since January, and had to take an extended seven weeks medical vacations to the United Kingdom. Since his return back to Nigeria on March 10, the President has not been attending to issues of governance and matters affecting ordinary citizens.

A Chieftain of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Chief Charles Idahosa, also lamented the issue, and posited that Nigeria might be faced with another Yar’Adua sage. He expressed this during a media chat with journalists yesterday in Benin.

“I fear that we are going back to 2010 over the issue of his health and what happened to Yar’Adua, a situation where top members of the party and some persons in government will be talking about a president running for a second term when we are all aware that the man needs to take care of his health. It has nothing to do Buhari, anybody can fall sick at any time.”

This situation and its consequences are better understood by Nigerians, as the unexpected death of President Umaru Yar’Adua in 2010 sparked political infighting that threatens the foundation of the country before final swearing-in of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
