101 young Nigerians selected for 2017 Mandela Fellowship

Some of Nigeria's current young business and civil right organisation leaders are Alumni of this fellowship.

The United States of America Embassy in Nigeria has announced the nomination of 101 young Nigerians as participants at the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.

The fellowship, which began in 2014, is the flagship programme of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) which is structured to empower young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking from Sub-Saharan Africa.

The selected fellows, who are mainly between the ages of 25 and 35, are expected to have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive impact in their organisations, institutions, communities, and countries.

Fellows participate will to be taking through an intensive, six-week programme on academic excellence and leadership focused on business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, public management, and renewable energy at over 40 U.S. colleges and universities.

Reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) indicated that only 86 Nigerians have been able to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship since its inception in 2014.

In a statement by the Embassy, “a total of 1,000 young leaders from would be hosted by different Universities in America for the programme this year.”

The embassy further added that 40 U.S. universities will host the 1,000 young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Embassy would be organising departure seminar for the participants today, Tuesday, May 9, 2017 in Abuja.
