Nigerian youths spend $50 monthly on sport betting

Mobile phone is becoming the Nigerian Las Vegas, as football betting and the popularity of European football leagues continue to grow in a symbiotic way with high acceptance among growing youth population.

Sport Betting

A recent study conducted by GeoPoll had shown that Nigerian youths spent at least $50 (N19,250 using black market rate) using their mobile phones to bet on football per month.

The report which was conducted across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in March, 2017 showed that Millennials (youths) in the region are frequently participants on various sport betting platforms, with Kenya having the highest number of betting youth. The survey was carried out among youth between the ages of 17-35 in Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya.

As noted in the report, gambling is becoming popular among Nigerian youths due to their high affinity towards sports and the proliferation of local sports betting players in the country. Though this industry is nascent in Nigeria, only about 5% of income of the youth are spent on sport gambling.

Other part of the result showed some youths in Nigeria engaged in multiple sport betting on a daily basis (7% more than once a day while 15% engaging in sport bet only once in a day).

Among the most popular gambling options, football betting reigns in all other countries except in South Africa. Nigerian youths bet the most after Kenya with 60% of bets being placed on football matches.
