He added that his team is open minded about North American Free Trade Agreement discussions.

The Mexican peso extended its early losses slightly after Ross' comments. It is down by 0.7% at 19.6444 per dollar as of 8:01 a.m. ET.

Last week, Ross argued in an interview with CNBC that the peso would recover should the US and Mexico manage to renegotiate and improve a trade deal.
