The annual celebration is celebrated in different countries every year on September 27. The choice of this day for the event is because the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) had her laws become effective on this date in 1970.
The aim of the celebration is to make people aware of the importance of global tourism by informing them of the significant role tourism plays in a county's economy as well as it's effects on cultural and historical values.
Each year, a theme is selected for the event and celebrations are centered around that theme. The theme for this year is ''. Last year, the World Tourism Day was celebrated with the theme 'Millions of tourists, millions of opportunities'.

Different cities around the world are preparing to celebrate the event under the umbrella of this theme. Organisations, government, individuals and other stake holders in the tourism industry participate in the occassion.
Celebrations often include events such as tourism award ceremonies, photography competitions with tourism as themes and special exhibitions.
